Are bobcats dangerous?
When most people hear the word ‘bobcat’, they think of a fuzzy little feline who is ready to attack you and claw your eyes out.
But when you say the word ‘bobcat’ around an animal lover, they think of this:
- A beautiful beast that has many natural defenses.
- A stealthy hunter.
- An animal that is on the brink of extinction.
- And, one that can be very dangerous if they are provoked or taken by surprise.
Do Bobcats Attack Humans?
Yes, but not as often as you might think.
Bobcats typically stay away from people unless you get really close to them.
If you do get too close, it is suggested that you back away slowly.
Bobcats are fiercely protective of their young and territory.
In nearly all cases when a bobcat attacks a human, it will attack from behind.
This gives the person no warning until they felt its claws or teeth pierce their flesh.
Most bobcat attacks occur in the spring when the female is protecting her young.
Sometimes she will attack people who get too close to her kittens, but bobcats are usually gentle around humans unless they feel threatened.
What if I’m attacked by a wild animal?
It is best to stay calm and follow the steps below:
- Leave the animal alone.
- Speak calmly to calm the animal down, which will also let them know that you are human and not prey.
- Back away slowly without turning your back on them or running away.
- If attacked, do not play dead as this would be seen as an act of prey and would encourage them to attack more.
- Fight back with anything you can find, even if it is your bare hands. Bobcats and other animals will often lose interest in you shortly after making contact, but be prepared to fight just in case they try for a second strike.
What Should I do if I Encounter a Bobcat?
If you should see a bobcat, never run as this will encourage them to chase after you.
Turn around and walk away quietly.
If they stand up on their hind legs and seem agitated, take that as your warning sign and leave the area immediately.
They will not hesitate to attack if they feel threatened, so always err on the side of caution.
If you should encounter a baby bobcat who is separated from its mother, leave it alone or try to reunite them if possible.
Never grab an animal by the scruff of their neck; this will only scare them and they could attack you in defense.
It’s best to keep your distance.
If you should encounter an adult bobcat who is acting aggressively, try to make yourself seem as big as possible and make loud noises by banging on something nearby.
Some people will actually throw objects at them like rocks or sticks, but bobcats can usually tell that it’s not a direct threat to them.
So, are bobcats dangerous?
Well, long story short, bobcats are wary of humans but there is no reason to panic.
