How many animals are in the world?
The Earth is a big place.
And it’s full of animals that we call living things.
They can be plants, insects, birds, or mammals.
There are a lot of them! But how many?
According to Research
Research says there are currently 50,000 species of mammals on Earth.
Remember that these are just mammals.
There are many more other types of animals!
And this number continues to grow as new species are discovered every year.
Traits like body size, diet, and behavior separate different animal groups from one another.
Scientists think that about 86% of mammals weigh less than a kilogram (2 pounds).
So we can use this as a rough minimum estimate of how many small animals there are.
If we take the number of large animals to be about 7% (14,000) and add it to 86% (43,000) of ALL the little animals, we get something like 57,000 animal species!
That’s already a lot of animals.
But it doesn’t even include insects, which could easily be millions of species.
They’re especially hard to count because there are so many small ones that scientists don’t even know about yet!
So we can guess that there are over 100,000 living things on Earth at the very least.
But we’re just talking about animals here.
There are millions of kinds of plants and algae, and probably over a billion kinds of microbes in the world!
So including everything, there could be trillions or quadrillions (1,000,000,000,000) of living things on Earth right now.
We don’t even know for sure.
Well, now you know how many animals are in the world.
It might be a lot of animals, but it’s probably not even close to all of them!
However, we’re not here to count on rough estimates alone.
Research from the University of Michigan
According to research from the University of Michigan, there are over 8.7 million species of animals that we know about and they come in all shapes and sizes.
There are 100,000 species of beetles alone!
Most of these animals live on land, but there’s still a lot that lives in the water.
There are 1 million species of fish, plus other aquatic life like coral and mollusks.
Many thanks to research, we have discovered about 98% of all the animals in the world!
That leaves only 2% that are still left undiscovered. We also know that there are currently about 10,000 new species being identified each year.
From all these amazing numbers and facts you can see that there are a lot of animals in the world and we have just scratched the surface.
