What sound does a coyote make?
Coyotes are nocturnal animals, meaning they are most active at night.
Most of their hunts and activities occur after dark.
Coyotes usually begin to stir around sunset and go out in search of food.
Their activity is mostly ceased by sunrise, so they can rest before the next hunt.
This means that coyotes aren’t seen as often in the day, and when they are seen, they aren’t heard.
However, if you are lucky enough to get a chance to listen in on all of the sounds that coyotes can make, you would be completely blown away.
Coyotes have quite the vocal range.
They use many different sounds depending on their situation and who they are communicating with.
In this case, since the coyote is a nocturnal animal, their communication skills are used mostly at night before dawn.
Barks
Coyotes sometimes bark as a sign of aggression to warn other predators away from their territory.
If they feel threatened, they may also bark to ward off predators.
This is often used when they are protecting their food or young.
Whine
Coyotes may whine when they are in close proximity to other coyotes.
This sound is used in an attempt to come together for a better advantage in hunting, socializing, and safety reasons.
Coyotes also tend to whine before dawn, which many believe is because of the full moon.
Growl
Coyotes may growl when they are trying to scare off other animals.
They will also growl if they feel threatened or if there is something suspicious about their surroundings.
However, it is important to note that coyotes rarely attack another animal without warning, so this sound is most likely used as a friendly warning or a threat to ward off other animals.
Howl

The most recognizable coyote sound is its howl.
Coyotes will howl before the sun goes down, at dawn, and sometimes during a full moon.
Their calls can be heard from miles away!
However, a coyote does not always have to be standing outside in order to howl.
Coyotes will howl at each other through their dens, even if they are underground!
They also may howl in order to guide the pack to them if they are separated.
Yelp
Coyotes make a high-pitched yip or bark when they are calling out to others within their pack.
This sound is used for communication between family members, and also to communicate with neighboring coyotes.
Coyote noises are definitely not what you think when you envision a wild canid making sounds as humans do!
Hopefully, this has helped clear up any confusion about the coyote’s vocal sounds.
